Differences between 3T and 1.5T MRI machines

With so many current options in availability and technology or MRI machines, it can be difficult to determine what is best for an imaging study. The “T’ in 1.5T and 3T MRI machines is in reference to the tesla, which is used to measure the strength of the magnet used in the MRI machine. The varying tesla determines the quality of the images, but there are other determining factors dependent on the person or body part being studied.

A major advantage in the advancement of MRI technology and the availability of the 3T MRI machine is higher resolution images due to the stronger magnet. 3T MRI machines have also been able to shorten scan times without compromising image quality.

One factor to consider when scheduling your imaging study is that availability of 3T machines is much more limited than the availability of the standard 1.5T machine. Trying to schedule an MRI with a 3T machine when the study does not require the technology can prove to be more difficult that scheduling with a standard machine and could lead to a delay in scheduling the scan.

Due to the varying composition of body parts from person to person, a 3T MRI machine might not be an option for certain patients, such as those with metal in the body or other bodily implants.

With these few key points on the difference between 3T and 1.5T MRI machines, deciding which machine is fit for your needs may be a little easier.
